" Overview
The Organization was registered and started functioning as a proper NGO with three thrust areas namely, Education, Medical Services and Poverty Relief. MESCO has been working for the upliftment of downtrodden through its various schemes and institutions for over the last four decades. MESCO provides sewing machines to widows, deserted, destitute and orphan girls in and around Mumbai (urban slums) after taking a trade test.
How It Works
• Beneficiaries visit the MESCO office in Mahim on 10th of each month at 9 a.m. to collect the application form.
• MESCO distributes not more than 15 forms. If the numbers are more they draw lots on the spot and select 15 people
• The form must be submitted within a week. Name, address, family status, number of bread earners, Pan card or Adhaar card are mandatory
• Once the forms are received the ladies are called on a set date for a trade test at MESCO's Dharavi VTC centre.
• They are given a one-metre cloth piece and half an hour to showcase their cutting and stitching skills. They are marked on 50 marks by the teacher.
• Once they clear this test a short interview is taken on the spot by MESCO committee members.
• Finally, machines are distributed 3/4 times a year to the shortlisted candidates
• The women are counselled on the importance of using the machine as a source of income.
