Help to restore vision of a rural poor person by sponsoring the part cost of his cataract surgery, INR 2300

Sankara Eye Foundation units across India are recognized as one of the premier providers of eye care in the country. The vision of Sankara was born from the need to provide quality eye care to everyone, regardless of socio-economic, religious, linguistic and geographical backgrounds.

The Basics

Blindness is a major public health problem in India. The sobering statistics are a clear illustration of the vicious cycle of poverty & disability. Generally without an income, persons with disabilities are amongst the poorest members of the society; poverty also deprives them of access to healthcare. While cataract can be treated with an expensive, simple operation, some evidence suggested that lack of money (affordability) is a major barrier to uptake of cataract surgery among poorer and economically disadvantaged sections of the society.

How It Works

• On the day of the camp, those who have been identified by the team will be brought to the base hospital on the same day for advance treatment or surgery.
• On the first day, lab investigations will be conducted.
• The surgery will take place on the second day.
• On the third day after the surgery, the patient is observed, and offered proper guidance on post operation cares.
• Finally, the patients will be dropped back to their respective villages.

• 3 days – Period of time during which patients will stay at the hospital
• 1 month – Duration of time required for arranging the camps
• 25% – Percentage of the world’s population of blind people which is in India
• 60% – Percentage of people who turn blind due to cataract
• 250 km. – Distance between hospital and people’s homes in each unit Coimbatore, Bangalore, Shimoga, Guntur, and Anand
• 2 million – Annual incidence of blind patients due to cataract
• 12 million – Number of people in India who have a potentially blinding eye disease
• 40 million – Cataract is the cause of blindness for half of this number of blind people worldwide

Story of Gowda
Hulladi Gowda, 70 yrs old, resident of Halaguru camp, Mandya was working in the fields from dawn to dusk. As days went by it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to see anything clearly. His vision was diminishing, but he had to work to support his family. He three children. He had two sons and a daughter. Both the sons got the job as daily wage laborer for which they left their house. So the burden of looking after the family fell on his shoulders.
One fine morning when he was working in the fields he heard announcement about an eye screening camp in the village. He went to the camp and we informed he would be treated free of cost for his eye problem. His village neighbors were kind and they agreed to look after his large family.
He was glad that he decided to undergo surgery at Sankara Eye Hospital. He was operated for cataract and is extremely happy that he can see the world better. He was impressed with the whole facility, the hospitality, patient care and clinical care. He is eternally thankful to the entire Sankara team.
