Sponsor a Grain Bank run by women to help families get food grains in time of need, INR 10000

Aged agricultural labour in India is among the worst-off in terms of employment and resources for nutrition. Employment is very difficult to come by, and when it does, it often results in very poor pay. Coupled with irregularity and the need to support a family, they are forced to beg or take exploitative loans. Shramik Bharti is seeking to improve conditions for such people through the establishment of grain banks. These have been welcomed in the community, especially by destitute elderly, women-headed families and landless households; now more villages want them.

The Basics

• The donation will provide fresh grain banks to the poor villagers.
• These grain banks are managed by women’s self-help groups (SHGs).
• The banks provide grains on credit at the time of need.
• The loan is returned at the time of harvest, in the form of grain, with 25% interest on the original quantity.
• Poor families in the village, who do not have sufficient food grains to sustain their family all through the year, can thus borrow and return, as required.
• There will be no income generated out of this activity but replenishing the grains will help sustain it for years.
The Statistics

• 12 – number of Grain Banks established so far by Shramik Bharti in the villages of Akabarpur block of Kanpur Dehat.
• 5 – the maximum number of families each bank supports.
• 2 – the number of members accountable for each grain bank.

Grain bank- a boon for poor villagers
Maina, aged 60 years, lives in village Kurianpurwa Ekghara with 5 member family. She belongs to backward caste. They do not have land and work as agriculture labourer. The cereals that they get as wages during harvest do not support them for the whole year. Moreover they do not get any wage work in lean agriculture season. It becomes really difficult to feed the family in such time. They borrow cereals from large farmers of the village. In return they get lower wages for their labour during agricultural season.
Shramik Bharti established a Durga Grain Bank in village Kurianpurwa Ekghara in Oct2011 with the support of HelpAge International. The grain bank is managed by Om Shree, a volunteer selected by Durga Elderly Women Self Help Group. This grain bank was started with 1500 kg wheat. This was stocked in 3 metal bins.
One day in the month of January, I had very little flour to cook. Neither my husband nor me were getting any work for last one week. We were sitting and discussing what to do now. All of a sudden I remembered that our group had started a grain bank few months back. Next morning I met Om Shree, who manages Durga Grain Bank in our village. I borrowed 100 kg wheat. It was really a great relief. My family was very happy that day. When we got wheat as our share in harvesting work, we returned to grain bank the 100 kg along with 25 kg as our contribution. Durga Grain Bank is a real bank for us.
