The area of work covererd by the Kaithan Centre is 13 villages in Sidhauli Block, Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh. During a health check-up camp in the school, organized by Milaan, it was revealed that 95% of the children in the school are malnourished. Most of the children in the school come from very poor Dalit backgrounds and generally carry last night s leftover as lunch which is normally a chapatti with pickle/sugar. Reading books and solving equations in a classroom is not possible on a hungry stomach. Hunger is a basic survival need of human beings making it a biological imperative that overshadows most other needs, including education. This mid-day meal programme is an ongoing programme that provides the children studying at the Swarachna Learning and Resource Centre a complete meal as part of their daily routine during the school day. The centre prepares a nutritionally balanced meal for over 300 children on 240 working days in a year. The kitchen and other resources required for preparing the meal are provided by the centre. Items are bought in bulk wherever possible. The programme also creates employment for those villagers who are engaged in the process of procuring and preparing the meal. Since these are generally the women folk of the village, who are also mothers of the students, the quality of the meal is ensured.

Swarachna: A Story of Hope & Positive Transformation
Savitri had to drop out of school after 8th grade because her family could not financially afford to send her to school. Even had they been able to, her parents would have been deterred by the fact that the nearest senior secondary school is over 13 Km away. Her circumstances reduced her childhood to doing household chores, waiting to be given away in marriage.
In 2009, Savitri was enrolled in the Swarachna Learning and Resource Centre, under a program which brings backschool dropout girls to school and prepares them for class 10th exams. This included visiting her family and convincing her parents to send her to school.
Her new found confidence speaks volumes and is the true success of this story. Where, before she had little to look forward to, today she dreams of becoming something in life. It has become the foundation of her high self-esteem and will be the launch pad for even greater achievements. She is one of the best singers at school, good at studies and is popular among all. She is always amongst the top five students in her class and loves to participate in sports.
