Help poor people from slums access health care at our centre, INR 2200

Sukarya centre provides quality health services to the underprivileged of Saraswati Kunj slums of Gurgaon.

The Basics

Many people living here still do not have access to basic quality health care services. Government health centres are located very far away and the costs incurred in travelling these distances, coupled with the unpredictability of finding a provider at the centre is the reason why most of the people turn to quacks for help. Through Swasthya Kendra, Sukarya provides the entire gamut of primary health services.

How It Works

• A physician runs the clinic every Thursday and provides medical check-up and medicines.
• The centre is supported by a strong community outreach programme where a community health worker conducts home visits to build awareness about key health issues like nutrition, personal hygiene and sanitation.
• They also send people requiring help to the centre and follow up those undergoing treatment to ensure that they recover completely.
• The health workers counsel women on antenatal care, breastfeeding, importance of an institutional delivery, anaemia control etc.
• This donation will be used to support a day’s cost of this health centre.

• 1 day – Number of days that the clinic was run before 2013
• 2 days – Number of days that the clinic will be run from February 2013

Story of Santosh
The slums are uniformly characterized by inadequate provision of basic infrastructure and public services necessary to sustain health, such as water, sanitation, and drainage. The Sukarya Swasthya Kendra functioning since 2005 in the premises of Sukarya at Sushant Lok is catering to the basic health needs of the population residing in such urban slums. 32 year old Santosh, a widow and one of our patients worked with a private school as a cleaner in Gurgaon. She supports her two sons and one daughter. Santosh suffered from acute body pain for many months but did not receive any treatment as the nearest government facility was 6 kms away and she could not afford the costs of a private facility. As a result she could not also efficiently discharge her duties at work and had to take leave.
Our community health worker met her and convinced her to see the doctor at the community health centre. There she received proper medicines and counseling. The community health worker followed her throughout the period of the treatment to ensure that she took proper care and completed all the medicines.
Today, Santosh is back to her job in the school and now regularly visits the centre for all her ailments. She is back to her job in the school and also takes her children for all their treatment. Like Santosh many of our patients are happy with the treatment and come regularly to follow up.
