Overview

Abhoy Mission was founded in 2001 with the aim of providing shelter for orphans with special needs. There are Homes in different districts of Tripura including Gakulnagar, Bishalgarh Block and Sepahinjala District.

How it works

• Most of the children are assessed by the authorities of the Homes. However, a few of them are sent by Government agencies.
• If the authorities are successful in locating the parents of the children, they are sent back home. Or else, they continue to stay in the Homes.
• The authorities of the Homes are dedicated in providing adequate care and shelter to orphans with special needs.
• Hence, the children continue to remain with them from the day of admission till the day they are able to take care of themselves or till 18 years of age.
• All the required materials for the Homes are bought in bulk on a regular basis.
• Some amount of funds is taken care of by the National Trust. However, it is not sufficient to cover the entire expenses of the Homes.

Statistics

• 6 to 18 years – Age group of the children residing in the Homes.
• 25 – Total number of children currently residing in the Homes.
• 30 – Number of children that can be accommodated in the Homes.

Ratna – An Inspiration
Ratna Das was enrolled in the SAMARTH project managed by Abhoy Mission, Agartala, Tripura when she was 6 years old. She suffered from Cerebral Palsy, stammered and was malnourished. At the time of enrolment, she could not lift her body in straight posture and she used to move with the help of all four limbs. She was dependent to others for her daily living activities.
A comprehensive treatment plan including physiotherapy was devised for her. Emphasis was given on training of daily living activities. When she reached a stage where she could lift her body herself and begin walking with her lower limbs, training on reading, writing and household activities were introduced. Seeing her progress we decided to have her admitted into a regular school. In the beginning she was escorted to school on a wheel chair; now she is going to school independently on her own effort.
Ratna can read and write in Bengali. She can write her name and address in English. She can solve simple arithmetic problems like addition and subtraction. She can do household activities like house cleaning, washing clothes, arranging beds etc. She supports other children as and when necessary. She takes part in different co-curricular activities like drawing, singing etc.
