Donate a cycle rickshaw for a poor villager as a livelihood option, INR 10000

Bani Mandir, along with volunteers operates a programme to provide a livelihood to poor villagers by distributing a cycle rickshaw.

How It Works

• Most of the people that apply for this programme are either unemployed or rural workers, who cannot afford the Rs. 30-40 per day to rent the cycle rickshaws.
• Since village roads are narrow, cycle rickshaws become the most convenient mode of transport. Therefore it helps the beneficiaries earn up to Rs. 150 -200/- per day and approximately Rs. 5000/- per month. This income can significantly alter the standard of living for their families.
• The staff and volunteers choose the beneficiaries based on surveys, with the help of the villagers and VDC based on the programme’s requirement and the village Panchayat’s recommendation.
• Bani Mandir selects people living below the poverty line who cannot afford two square meals in a day.
• The final list of beneficiaries is collated by the implementing authority of Bani Mandir.
• Individual donors, including Give India donors help Bani Mandir in running this programme successfully.

The Basics

• Bani Mandir chooses cycle rickshaws of the best quality at the lowest rate from among 3 suppliers.
• The rickshaws are delivered to the beneficiaries within 5 days of placing the order.
• Bani Mandir follows up with beneficiaries regularly after the delivery has been made.

The statistics

• Bani Mandir distributed 100+ rickshaws in 2014-15 from GiveIndia donations

A cycle changed a life
Ashok Das of village Ashapur, Maheswara, District, South 24 Parganas was a very poor agricultural worker. He has no cultivable land of his own. All his family members worked hard to scratch out a living including his children who could not go to school.
In 2006, Bani Mandir enrolled his youngest daughter who was about 5 years old in school. The same year, Ashok was given a cycle rickshaw through the Bani Mandir Income generation programme.
Ashok started earning Rs.100 per day. In due course he started trading in Rice and food grains, where all the other members of his family helped. Now the family is better off, all the children are in school and look forward to a bright future.
