10 days intensive therapy for a physically challenged at the therapy center, INR 3600

Vikash has been running their Community Based Rehabilitation for disabled children for the past 12 years. Mukti Kiran is an independent institution providing institutional services along with residential facilities to disabled people.

How It Works

• The initiative works with disabled children who are a marginalized and neglected group, primarily because of their impairments.
• Families of such children often do not know how to care for such children.
• However, the community based rehabilitation programme has limited scope to empower the disabled children who have higher levels of disabilities.
• These children need institutionalized care for a couple of weeks/months.
• The intensive care/therapy has to be followed by therapy and training at home.
• It is impossible for poor parents to meet the cost of such services wherever it is available. Vikash thus established Mukti Kiran, in Bhubaneswar.
• Being the capital of Odisha, Bhubaneswar is easily accessible from all towns/villages in the state. The city also has specialists who can be hired for special interventions. It is also easier to arrange the required assistive devices and therapy equipment from here.

The Statistics

• The facility offers 15 beds for residential accommodation of disabled children too.
• Of the 710 disabled children Vikash currently works for, 100 are in need of intensive care/therapy.
• Each child requires at least 10-30 days stay at the centre.

Santosh Sahoo, born in a poor landless family in the village of Anantapur, Gp: Kanti, Block Pipili in the district of Puri was suffering from epilepsy (7 to 8 times fits in a day). Few months later when there was no improvement, the parents went for medical treatment. The treatment continued for some time but there was no improvement of the situation His mother Sini Sahoo, arranged some money from her parents but that was not enough to continue treatment of Santosh. Santosh is too young and has experienced trauma at the tender age, which is believed to have prevented his physical, mental growth and development.
Santosh Sahoo was taken to mukti Kiran in the year 2010 and stayed there for a period of7 months on intervals. At the centre he was given food and accommodation free of cost borne by the donor of the project.
