The Basics

Like regular students, blind students also need to take notes for future reference. Papers written using Braille slate may not last for long, are not suitable for notes taken in bulk and difficult to carry around. bulky. The visually-challenged students operate computers with the help of screen-reading software. With the help of a netbook, they can record classroom sessions and preserve the same for future reference. A netbook has the capacity of recording hundreds of notebooks. Besides, it also offers them the option of using Daisy players, which is a software that enables them to navigate easily in the real world. In addition, the netbook ensures easy access to the Internet, thus enabling the students to gain access to a greater source of information. A Netbook is thus a great learning tool for the visually-impaired students, and can go a long way in motivating them to continue with higher education too.

Providing a laptop to assist in higher education.
Balamurugan aged 19, a visually impaired boy finds difficult to cope up with the lessons taught in his college. He is doing his Bachelor in Tamil Literature. In case of college, there are no prescribed textbooks or reference material in neither Braille nor audio. Notes given in the class should be noted down. So he found it difficult to continue his study without help from others.
His interest and talents was identified and we approached a philanthropist who financed to get him a Netbook with which he can explore more information and learn well.
With the help of the Netbook, like his sighted counterparts he can record notes in class itself and maintains the same for future reference. He became independent with the netbook. The notes taken can be preserved properly and he can use the same for examinations. Besides he can also browse the net for reference material the first step for becoming self reliant.
