Provide school supplies to a child labourer/ child of construction workers at Saath’s Child Friendly Spaces, INR 500

SAATH (Initiatives for Equity in Development) has facilitated participatory processes that improve the quality of life for the urban and rural poor since 1989. Its single-stop, integrated services reach over 100,000 slum dwellers in Ahmedabad and many more in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

How It Works

• SAATH designed a programme called Child-Friendly Spaces, a unique 4-hour non-formal education course as a stepping- stone to later enroll these children in formal education.
• The project works towards helping these children rejoin school.
• It also works with employers and parents to support the child in this process.
• Child Spaces are different from Balwadis.

The Statistics

• Currently, there are 8 Child Friendly Space centres; 3 in the slums and 5 on construction sites in Ahmedabad.
• These cater to about 240 children and are run by trained teachers from the community.
• Through these centres, SAATH has steered more than 100 child labourers and children of labourers back into formal schooling systems.

Lots of Dreams
Reshma (15) and Gulshan (10) are two sisters, residents of Juhapura area of Ahmedabad. Their family consists of their grandparents, their parents and 2 younger sisters. Reshma’s mother works as a housemaid. Reshma and Gulshan also work as housemaids. Her father does not work as he is a heart patient. It is a hand to mouth situation in the family. Both the sisters rely on their employer for food most days. Their joining the classes ensures that they get the additional nutrition supplement as well, every day.
Through Firdosben, the teacher at Child Friendly Space, Reshma & Gulshan found out about the class. They got enrolled and attend it regularly.
After 3 months, when it was time for admission, Gulshan, with the help of teacher got enrolled in Grade 4 in Municipality School at Juhapura. Gulshan now goes to school regularly. However, she has not stopped working. Reshma wants to study further. She is very active, regular and learns things quickly according to her teacher. She wants to become a teacher.
