SAATH (Initiatives for Equity in Development) has facilitated participatory processes that improve the quality of life for the urban and rural poor since 1989. Its single-stop, integrated services reach over 100,000 slum dwellers and youth in Ahmedabad, and many more in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

How It Works

• One of their programmes Udaan trains young adults from economically weak backgrounds to assimilate them into the competitive job market.
• Training includes Basic English, Computer & Life Skills, training to work in Beauty Parlours, IT-Enabled Services, Desktop Publications, Nursing- Bedside Patient Assistance, Call Centre (BPO), Customer Relation in Sales, Retail, Computer Hardware, and Tally Accounts.
• Trainees need to complete 300 hours in total with 4 hours a day.
• SAATH also does a follow-up with trainees, 6 months after they complete the course.
• The project gets part grants from different donors and the participants also contribute Rs. 1000/- for the 3-month training programme.
• This donation will be used to refund participants contribution as well as finance a part of the project cost. The Statistics

• The trainees are between the ages of 18-35 years.

Livelihood Lifeline
Yadav Bhoomika is a student of Dariapur Umeed Centre (2nd batch). She is 18 years old. There are 4 family members in her family. She is living in Shahibag area of Ahmedabad. Her father is working as an operator in Fun Republic near Sarkhej Gandhinagar Highway earning Rs. 5000 per month and her mother is housewife. Her brother is studying in Grade 11. Her father is only an earning member of the family. Bhoomika has completed class 12th and due to long distance from her place to college she left her studies.
Bhoomika was not clear about her future studies. She received a pamphlet during the road show, organized by Umeed and visited the Dariapur centre. She took admission in the course of Office Administration. She joined Umeed to learn something new in her life and wanted to stand on her own feet. The positive impact of the programme on her is that she can speak openly in front of people. She became aware about her potentials and built a strong desire to go for further studies.
The training scheme also includes placement in jobs as part of its total programme. Hence the participant will be sure of getting placement after completion of the training. Currently she is working in Krishna Web Express- Reliance Communication as Customer Relation Executive. She is earning Rs.4000/- per month. Her dream is to be an air hostess. Her near future plan is to complete her bachelors and if she gets a chance she pursue higher studies in a well recognized institute.
