Bring joy to about 50 orphans by funding their recreational activities, INR 5000

Catalyst for Social Action (CSA) works with government destitute homes/orphanages in Pune and Orissa. Their objective is to bring about overall improvement in terms of child care, health and living standards, and educational standards.

The Basics

Children living in orphanages are usually confined to their institutes. They have very few or no opportunities to go out and experience the simple joys of life like eating a seasonal fruit, participating in camps/outings, competitions, creative activities, dancing, playing a sport, or acquiring small trinkets or bangles. Festive days are even gloomier, because they see their friends at school dressed up well and having fun, while they are confined to their rooms. CSA fulfils this need of the children by organizing events throughout the year.

How It Works

• Children are brought together for a day of fun and frolic.
• Wherever possible, some element of learning is added to the fun event with the aim of creating awareness about things.
• In the past, fun events have been organised, where children were also made aware of things like traffic rules, hand washing, general hygiene etc.

Celebrate the Fruit of the season
Most institutionalized children do not have the opportunity to taste the seasonal fruit-the mango, watermelon or even common orange. If at all they do, it is doled to them like everything else that they receive- always like alms! CSA have felt the need to give them some of the little pleasures of life.
CSA organize several functions round the year centering on the fruit of the season. On an identified day (if possible to synchronize with a festival), CSA assemble get together for children from across agencies/orphanages. It is a day of fun and frolic. They wash, clean, cut and distribute the fruit themselves. They enjoy themselves dancing, eating good food, and wearing clean clothes/shoes. It is also, the day when their teachers/orphanage staff mingles with them. With the fun activity, a creative session was organized; material was provided.
The most notable impact is that the children open up completely and have fun. No one is watching them or hauling them up for making mistakes. They feel wanted; they are a team- sharing the same fortunes, and they feel like normal kids! For those watching, the difference is visible and heartening.
