Overview

Catalyst for Social Action (CSA) works with government destitute homes/orphanages in Pune and Orissa. Their objective is to bring about overall improvement in terms of child care, health and living standards, and educational standards.

The Basics

The main aim of CSA is to provide educational opportunities to orphaned children, that are comparable to the opportunities available for children with families. In order to fulfil this aim, CSA has admitted children from a couple of orphanages in Orissa into some of the best English-medium schools in their respective localities.

How It Works

• The children are admitted into different grades, from nursery up to grade 2 depending on their age.
• Apart from tuition fees, lunch, transportation, books, uniform, shoes, rain wear, etc. are provided to these children.
• Further help is provided to these students through back up support, where a tutor is arranged to help the child.

Statistics

• 2- Number of orphanages from which students are sent to the schools.
• 5 -9 – Age group of the children who are sent to the schools.

Towards Family-like care
Orphaned children from remote orphanages in Orissa usually go to Govt. schools. They have no back up support as children in families have from their parents. In most cases the learning is poor and children tend to drop out when in the higher classes they are unable to cope with the learning pressures. Maria is one of several orphans in the Orissa Children’s Orphanage, Orissa. She lived a deprived life with only the bare necessities of food clothing and shelter. She went to a local Oriya school.
Maria was admitted to the Cambridge High School (ICSE), one that children from good families in Bhubaneswar attend. She was admitted into the nursery class and supported with the school fees, transportation, lunch/tiffin, uniform, books, shoes etc. CSA also arranged back up tuitions for her in the orphanage providing a substitute for parental support that a child gets at home.
Maria has fared remarkably well. She stood first in her class and is appreciated as a bright and intelligent child. Her reports are encouraging.
