Sponsor 10 meals for the caretakers of patients and tribal paramedic students at the Gudalur Adivasi Hospital, INR 580

The tribals of Gudalur are an exploited marginalized community. They had no access to health care. Deaths, from causes that were easily preventable, were rampant. The tribal population was dwindling in number. At this time ASHWINI was founded. The organization has been working for the health welfare of tribals since 1990.

How It Works

• The Gudalur Adivasi hospital caters primarily to the tribals of the Gudalur valley.
• There is a hospital canteen that cooks fresh meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
• Breakfast is often idli or Kanji (porridge) and lunch and dinner are rice with one curry containing pulses and vegetables.
• In order to avoid a welfare system, patients are encouraged to contribute whatever they can for their meals.
• Most patients who stay for a short time, pay most of the bills.
• The very poor patients as well as the ones that are admitted for prolonged periods are supported by this donation.

• 36 – Number of beds in the hospital
• 60% – Percentage of beds that are occupied at a given time
• 95% – Percentage of tribals who live below the poverty line

Story of Shanthi
On the verandas of their thatched huts, tribals lay down to die when they fall ill as they had no money to access healthcare. Shanthi too would have been would have been one such case.
The Gudalur Adivasi Hospital was set up for the tribals. All the staff too were tribals. The community was encouraged to seek healthcare.
Shanthi had a high fever from a huge breast abscess. She had to be admitted for many days. The family was in financial difficulty. She was given some free meals- whatever th family could not afford. She went home well and the family did not get into debt.
