Support nutrition for 25 poor children and help us in running our non formal center for a month, INR 3800

Towards Future runs a non-formal centre for 25 poor children (for 6-14 years old; but most of them are 10+ years and are in grade I-IV) at Kalyani. All children are at different levels of education. Though they are registered in a Government schools, they drop off in between. Which is why Towards Future brings them to this non-formal centre - to build up their confidence and motivate them to take up formal school education again. The objective of Towards Future is to mainstream them after giving them proper training. This centre helps these children to get into formal education with fun. They are divided into two or three groups according to their levels and trained accordingly. The average period for a child to be at the centre varies from child-to-child. It could be anything between one and two years. The social workers at Towards Future do field visits once a week and select beneficiaries accordingly. If necessary, meetings are organised with family members to convince them to send their children to the centre. Supplementary nutrition is provided at the end of class. Towards Future also tries to mobilize human resources from the locality. Educational items are given at the beginning of class, and later based on need. In the beginning, one Bengali to English dictionary, two sets of copy books, and one set of pens is provided. Rest of the money is spent on photocopying study materials, books, educational and children movie CDs, purchasing an English to Bengali dictionary, weekly magazines, and daily newspapers in English. Students are also encouraged to surf the internet at a cyber cafe to research articles on a given topic.

A second chance can bring a change a life of a poor child
Piyali Das is a girl of 12 years. She has two more sisters and one brother. Her father is a van puller and her mother works as a domestic helper. Her parents earn very little which is not sufficient to meet family requirements. In this situation to provide support for their children’s education was seems to be a luxurious things to do. So her mother was used to take the elder girls with her to help in domestic work. Piyali was used to do the household work in absence of her mother. She dropped her education in Grade 4, as she could not understand the lesson taught in her class. Her parents and other siblings were not been able to help her in this matter
When our social worker got this information, she met Piyali and her mother. She spoke about our center and requested her mother to send Piyali in our center which starts at 2.30 pm and continues till 5 pm. Piyali can attend our center after doing all the household work what was important for her mother. Her mother agreed with us and started to send Piyali in our center.
When Piyali came first to our center, she did not know to identify the alphabets. Now she can write her name, she can read small & simple sentences. She also learnt addition and subtraction; small & simple English word, table from 1 to 10. The most important news is that Piyali readmitted in formal school in grade 3 and this year she got promotion to grade 4. In spite of going in formal school her parents want her to continue in our center, because it helps Piyali to get into school again and she also receives back up support for her regular lesion.
