Overview

Sri Arunodayam is an NGO that undertakes care and rehabilitation of orphaned and abandoned mentally-challenged children. Their aim is to provide a safe environment where these children have access to their basic rights of protection, education, healthcare and a happy childhood.

The Basics

These children have been neglected and abandoned by their biological families. Prior to their coming to Sri Arunodayam, most of them would not have had square meals. This is evident through their physical, physiological conditions at the time of admission, and their natural longing to have good food.

How It Works

• Sri Arunodayam’s cooks prepare three meals a day.
• The menu is planned based on the recommendations of the dieticians in the Nutrition Department, Institute of Child Health, Egmore Children's Hospital, Chennai.
• Based on feedback from staff and adult residents, the menu is changed according to their taste, without affecting the nutritional value.
• The menu is changed according to the weather so that it helps the children develop immunity and not fall sick.
• When sufficient funds are received, “Ragi Malt” - a health drink which is prepared by their staff - is also given, as the children really enjoy this drink.
• Some children require assistance to eat their food.
• During meal time, the care giver, special educator and the physiotherapist work with the children to help them to independently eat their food.

Jayabharathi can eat now
Jayabharathi was found abandoned at the CSI Church, Erode. She was provided first aid and sent to an adoption home. When they realized that she is a child with special needs and was then sent to Sri Arunodayam. When she came to us in January 2007 she was bed ridden, dependent on others for her activities of daily living and both her hands did not function normally.
Physiotherapy was provided to make her raise on her knees and come to crawling position - this was achieved. to make her kneel with support - this was too achieved. to stretch the hamstrings and adductors of both lower limbs and to improve her hand function - now hand function is improving and she can eat by herself .
Now she is able to crawl, sit with support and eat by herself and her hand function has improved.
