Deafblindness is a unique disability and the needs of deafblind children are different from a child who is only deaf or blind. Developing trained teachers is the single most important component of the system of deafblind children's education and rehabilitation. Specialist training helps deafblind children to learn to communicate and express themselves. Sense International (India) supports human resource development by the Rehabilitation Council of India recognized Teacher Training Courses by its partner organizations in the country. The course is run in two major institutions Helen Keller Institute for Deaf and Deafblind in Mumbai and The Clark School for the Deaf and Mentally Retarded in Chennai. Duration of the course is 2 academic years for 2011-12. Teacher trainees are selected based on the response to the all India advertisement by RCI for the course. All the interested candidates appear for an online entrance examination conducted by RCI. After the result, both the centers have counseling sessions to finalise selection of the candidates. Being the Knowledge Leaders in "Deafblindness", Sense International (India) provides technical support in terms of designing/ adapting curriculum, conducting lectures, practical exposure, placements of the students at well-established deafblind programmes. This helps the TTC to ensure the quality of education imparted to trainees. While the course is implemented by partner organisations in Mumbai and Chennai, sponsorships to deserving candidates are given directly by Sense International. The organisation sponsored 16 trainees from poor family backgrounds the last academic year.

Sponsor course-fee of one teacher for training in Deafblindness
Earlier teachers trained to work with single category disability were teaching children with Deafblindness but with incomplete understanding and input. But after the teacher-training course was started, a cadre of trained teachers was developed for the needs-based education and rehabilitation of children with deafblindness.
The training will help the teachers to get acquainted with specific need areas and challenges faced by deafblind children, the nature of curriculum and the specialized method of teaching children with deafblindness in various settings like residential schools, day care centres, resource centres and centre/home based programmes.
In the last 9 years we have been able to develop more than 170 teacher trainees, who specialize in working with deafblind children and slowly deafblind children are being recognized in the country and the schools are opening their doors for education because there is support of qualified teachers.
