Sewing machine and 3 month vocational skill training for a poor adolescent girl or woman, INR 6710

Chaithanya Educational and Rural Development Society (CERDS) is an NGO based out of the Guntur district in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. During the NGO's baseline survey they observed that a key problem in all target areas was unemployment. The primary objective of this programme is to create employment opportunities for disadvantaged adolescent girls in rural areas or women widowed at an early age by providing training in tailoring skills and a sewing machine.

How It Works

• Beneficiaries are selected through various methods like, identification of the target families during field visits, enquiring with the local community and direct requests from potential beneficiaries
• Beneficiaries are then shortlisted based on their attitude and approach, education levels, learning capabilities, personal verification and by collecting data on the beneficiary's socio-economical conditions.
• Under this programme the NGO provides skill training to the beneficiaries for 3 months either at its own training centre (at the local level) or through a tie-up with other training centres in and around the village (within a radius of 15 km).
• In the latter option, the women are enrolled with the training centres and the cost is borne by CERDS.
• The training sessions are conducted throughout the year whenever there is a requirement.
• It is held for 4 hours every morning. At the end of the training the women are provided with a sewing machine and a kit to start their own little business.
• The support provided helps young women (who have unfortunately been widowed in their adolescence), learn basic skills in tailoring and provides them with a sewing machine to start earning on their own.
• This would help them with a sustainable and self-reliant source of livelihood.

Enabling the Adolescent Girl child to become self reliant
60% of the girl adolescents in the area of Mangalagunta, Markapur Mandal in Prakasam District, one of target rural area of CERDS, are in poorer families. Most of them are illiterate and drop-out children. So, labor and manual work was the only kind of employment they could have found. These adolescents were working as labor force in the agricultural fields without proper remuneration and safety measures. Though, many adolescents are interested to take training on any one of job-oriented skill, it was very difficult to them to spend amount for training in their conditions.
CERDS started a skill training centre at Mangalagunta with 20 rural girl adolescents, who came forward to get it interestingly. They were trained on Tailoring and embroidery course for 3 months. In the training period, they were provided some small stipend and learning material. After successful completion of training programme, two among the trainee adolescents were provided sewing machines with primary tools by CERDS by bearing 75% of the total unit cost.
The training provided an opportunity for the adolescents who are working as labor force to turn as productive work force and enhances the livelihood promotion in the region. Out of the trained twenty girl adolescents, nine started earnings on tailoring job and getting sustainable income than what they are earning before. With this, the economical condition of their families is also increased.
