St Jude India ChildCare Centres provide free of charge transport services to children and their parents from St Jude centres to the treating hospital. The children undergoing cancer treatment have a weak and compromised immune system due to the disease and further the harsh chemo/radio therapy they have to undergo. In this scenario, they require a clean environment at all times. Any contact with an alien body makes them an easy prey to secondary infections. This results in countering the positive effects of therapy and sometimes, a delay in the treatment process. St Jude believes in providing holistic care and support to the children to enable them to seamlessly complete the treatment process and fully recover from the disease. The transport service is one such effort towards helping them avoid any contact with the infections that they may encounter in the public transport system and making the journey of recovery as smooth as possible. The beneficiaries are out-station families who have no place to stay and source of income in the big cities. They travel from the rural and semi urban areas of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujrat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana etc. to avail best possible cancer treatment in big cities. The families belong to economically weaker sections of the society. The families’ main occupation is labourers, small shop owners, farmers, and teachers. The monthly salary of the parents is Rs 900 – Rs 3000. The NGO has dedicated vehicles to transport the families from St Jude centres to the treating hospital and back to the centres. The service is available Monday through Saturday all year round at all the 18 St Jude centres free of charge to all the families.
