Bridge the learning gaps of underprivileged children - Single donation, INR 100
 Mail

Bhumi works to ensure underprivileged children, previously unable to recognise alphabets, are able to speak and read and write in English.

The Basics

• Bhumi observes that almost all the children interacted with have English skills far below the age-appropriate levels at the start.
• Most children in Grade 2 are unable to recognise alphabets and Grade 5 children cannot write 3 letter words.
• Bhumi has an interactive platform that makes the process of learning interesting and enriching.
• The belief is that the children will become aware of letter-sound relationships, comprehend what they read and hear, express themselves in speech and writing, and even be able to converse in English within 2-3 years.
• The further aim is to improve their school life, and help them transition to colleges more easily.
• Bhumi identifies the best available volunteering talent and allocates 4-6 children per volunteer.
• Each lesson is for two hours, and is carefully structured to include listening, reading, speaking and writing components, delivered over the weekend by different batches of volunteers.
• The progress of the children is assessed through baseline, mid-year progressive and year-end assessments to monitor every child's progress. • For this effort, Bhumi has received the iVolunteer's Leader in Volunteer Engagement Award for 2013.

My name is Rajan
Ranjan like most of our children is a first generation learner from a disturbing background. He lacked the confidence to meet people, introduce himself and converse in basic English. He also saw the language as an unnecessary medium to interact. But knowing that the importance is significant, we have stepped in to make a difference.
Our trained volunteers spend 2 hours on Saturdays & Sundays with children like Rajan teaching English using interactive, visual and listening aids following a Cambridge University Curriculum. This aids his holistic development & moulds his personality for the better. Access to storybooks and English software on the computers through the week ensure the continuity between classes is not missed.
These days Rajan does not miss an opportunity to greet new people in English and has been utilizing every moment to improve his knowledge. His interest to read storybooks and daily newspapers stand testimony to this.
