Educate a child belonging to the very poor community for 6 months by part sponsoring teacher salaries, INR 3300

Shoshit Seva Sangh (SSS) runs a free English medium residential school in Patna for children of the poorest of the poor community in India - the Musahar community. In 2011, the school, Shoshit Samadhan Kendra, had 250 students, all of whom were living in the school hostel. This number increases by 50-55 each year. As there is lack of both literacy and education in this community, almost all the new admissions are in the pre-school class (UKG). Notwithstanding claims on paper and official handouts, even those children who are studying in 5th and 6th classes of the government village schools under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, are not fit to join even class 1 or class 2. Therefore, SSS aims to increase the numbers in the school gradually, and they hope to build a capacity to have 800 students in the free residential school in the next 4 or 5 years. They have recruited a well-qualified, and an experienced faculty in all the subjects taught at the school. The school follows the CBSE curriculum and teachers are paid the CBSE prescribed scale. Presently the ratio between the taught and the teachers is 1:20. The objective is to give these children high quality education to be able to compete with the best in the country. SSS also finances and facilitates the higher education of the children passing out from this school. They must be able to achieve a huge quantum jump in life so that they become role models in their community as well as catalyst of change. The cost per child thus works out to be Rs. 15,000 per year. This donation will help support the same.

The great transformation –
Pappu belongs to Musahars community. Musahars are landless labourers living in grinding poverty and sub-human conditions. 99.5% musahars are landless labourers and many among them are bonded labourers. They live as untouchables in ghettoes in the outskirts of the villages in Bihar and Jharkhand. Musahar children only know poverty and have an aimless existence deprived of hope and opportunity.
Pappu son of a landless labourer was selected during field visit to the musahar tolis. Pappu showed aptitude and keenness for serious studies. He was not going to government village school as classes were hardly held and the teacher showed no interest. Parents who were not regularly sending Pappu to village school readily agreed to send him to SSK convinced that the child will get quality education.
Pappu Kumar like others in the school is a shining example of the success and potential of this project. He has studied at SSK for two years. He has access to quality education and facilities including free boarding, lodging, medical, books, clothes etc. His academic performance is excellent and taking advantage of reservations he is likely to compete into reputed professional institutions of higher learning like IIT etc.
