Overview

Ashadeep was set up in 1996 in the North Eastern states of India for persons with mental disorders and their families, in an attempt to achieve better quality of life. Day Rehabilitation Centre is a sort of a Special School.

How It Works

• Beneficiaries are referred by doctors, parents and guardians of existing students, other NGOs, well-wishers etc.
• Qualified Special Educators registered under Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) have been employed to train the children.
• Training materials and guidebooks have been obtained from NIMH, Secunderabad.
• The main objectives are: 1. To impart Special Education, living skills, social skills and pre-vocational and vocational training to children and adults with Mental Retardation and associated disabilities.
2. Young children with Autism and Developmental Disorders receive special care and training on self-help skills, behavioural skills, speech and communication skills.
3. Rehabilitation process for individuals disabled through major mental illnesses, primarily Schizophrenia includes counselling, living & social skills training and vocational training.
4. A Sheltered Workshop has been set up as a necessary follow up of vocational training. Individual assessment is done for each beneficiary.
• Individual Planning is done according to the need of the beneficiary.
• Special emphasis on vocational training is given for youth according to his/her area of interest and capacity.

Statistics

• 10 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. – Timings of the school from Monday through Friday
• 10 yrs – The age limit for children who receive special care and training
• 18 years – Age of children who are trained in specific occupations according to his/her area of interest and capacity

Ranjita s excess energy has been channelized
Ranjita, 13 years old diagnosed as moderately mentally challenged but hyper active was becoming impossible to be managed at home. Her prominent hyperactive nature was a major worry for her parents, as she had to be left all alone at home while they go to their workplaces during the daytime
She was dmitted to our Day Care and Rehabilitation Centre at the age of 13 years. There her abundant extra energy was channelized to outdoor sporting activity and dancing. She was trained in Rock Climbing, Volleyball, Atheletics and Dancing
Today Ranjita has reached a stage where she is attending National level Special Olympics (Bharat) Coaching camps at Chennai, Dimapur, Gangtok and Jamshedpur. She has also undergone training in Mountaneering at Srinagar under the Indian Mountaneering Association. Ranjita is also regularly performing on stage as a dancer and making her parents proud
