Provide basic necessities for a month for a child orphaned by HIV/AIDS, INR 700

Akhanda Seva for International Shanti is an NGO that is based in Mysore. It works closely with a local HIV clinic that runs a paediatric HIV program.

How It Works

• A list containing names of the poorest paediatric patients requiring help is sent to the NGO. These children have either lost one or both parents and are currently staying with a relative, which is usually a grandmother or an aunt. However, they are not properly looked after by these relatives.
• Care packages are distributed to these children and their guardians once a month – on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. These packages include hygienic and nutritious things for the children.
• These are the days when the children come to the clinic for their monthly check-ups. The care packages are then handed over to them by the NGO staff.
• Every month the same children are given the packages. However, every now and then, new children are also added to the NGO’s list.

A little goes a long way
Mahesh, uncle to Anita, aged six, took the girl in about a year ago after her mom (his sister) and dad both died. Mahesh, a young man, just started a family with his wife. They have an old watch shop that supplements its sales by renting DVDs. Their house has no electricity and they cook using firewood. Uncle lives in a village far from Mysore, and takes her to the city for their monthly checkups, a four-hour bus ride each way. Anita and her sister, Ambika lost both their mom and dad to HIV/AIDS related illnesses. Anita is tested positive for HIV, and now she and her sister live with their uncle in his small house. It is a burden for the uncle to care for the girls, but there is nobody else to care for them, so he diligently does so, taking Anita to monthly checkups and making sure she takes medicines.
We provide a monthly care packages to Anita and her uncle which provides him with some support in taking care of his niece. The care package includes a small amount of cash, to help ease his financial burden, as well as nutritional items and soap to help them stay clean very important for HIV+ children.
The new program was started in September 2008. It has been received well both by our recipients and the medical clinics that refer their poorest patients to us. The care package eases the financial burden of uncle Mahesh by about 30% - 50%, and he expresses his gratitude each time we see him. With your help, we can expand the program to help even more children who have lost their parents to this disease.
