Care, education and training of children with intellectual disability
The children with intellectual disability were confined to their homes and some even chained at home when both parents went out for work. Many were not able to perform their daily chores. They did not go through any formal education or training. Virendra Rawat is one such child with intellectual disability who was admitted in Raphael Special School in June 1996 at the age of 18 years.
These children are taught daily living skills, academic lessons and vocational skills. Virendra Rawat, after initial education and training in Raphael Special School, was put through vocational class and showed potential for paper products. He was given on the job training in making paper bags.
These children pick up daily living skills to a great extent. Some of them are employed in Raphael rehabilitative workshop. Virendra Rawat is now working in the Paper Products section of Raphael Rehabilitative Workshop and is in receipt of a stipend. He is very happy and motivated and so are his parents.
