Gift a child a chance at education - Single donation, INR 100
 Mail

Asha Kiran runs an education initiative for the coastal and kolleru lake villages near Machilipatnam. They focus on providing education supplies to children from economically backward families. A BPL survey found that the percentage of school dropouts is high among the orphan and semi-orphan children due to the caretakers’ poverty.
How it Works

• The Asha Kiran team visits the schools in these villages and interacts with the school authorities, education committee and village development committees.
• They identify and list the orphan children or children with single parent that come from poor economic backgrounds.
• During their interactions, the volunteers discovered that some of the orphan and semi orphan children (9 - 15 years) are made to discontinue their studies for getting income from rag picking and fishing activities.
• The NGOs helps in rescuing these children from child labor and enables them to continue with their education by providing education support.
• The donations are also used to provide uniforms, school bags, rice and provisions to these children at any time during the year.

Facilitating an orphan child, Sowmya to continue his/her education
Sowmya is ten years of age. She is from Narayanapuram village of coastal area in west Godavari district. She belongs to a marginalized community schedule tribe yanadi. Her mother Suramma died when Sowmya was an infant baby. Her real problems started when her father Chenchayya left the family after death of Suramma five years back. After the death of her mother, she went to the home of her grandmothers (Laxmamma) house, she is a rag picker. However she was used only as a domestic servant and rag picking.
This case is identified by the Asha Kiran volunteer and the school committee, they brought to the notice of ASHA KIRAN, we provided 2 sets of uniforms, note books, footwear, rice and provisions to Sowmya. She is going to school regularly, she is happy about this support and she got confidence to continue her education without hurdles. Her grandmother Laxmamma also feels happy that her granddaughter’s educational needs are met and she is sending her granddaughter to school regularly.
Sowmaya is very happy to be in the school and made lot of new friends. She is now studying 5th grade. As she was out of school for longtime now her class teacher Mrs. Hagar is taking special attention on Sowmaya. She is showing good progress in education.
