Provide a fishing net for a very poor tribal fisherman, INR 4700

Chaithanya Educational and Rural Development Society (CERDS) is an NGO based out of Guntur, in Andhra Pradesh, India. Tribal welfare is one of the focus areas for CERDS. As part of its activities, CERDS has adopted 12 tribal communities along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, where the living conditions are very poor. The primary objective of this programme is to help tribal fisher folk earn a stable income.

How It Works

• In these communities, CERDS has been implementing several poverty-alleviation and welfare schemes like, employment generation through provision of fishing nets, drinking water facilities, aids for children's education, health and sanitation programmes etc.
• Thus a good rapport has been developed with the locals and the schemes are running well with their participation.
• CERDS has been receiving several requests for fishing nets from poor fisher folk as well as local elected representatives.
• Almost 90% of these families catch fish by their traditional practices using their hands. However, they can only manage a small catch, which also requires a lot of time and energy. It is also not possible do deep- water fishing because that requires fishing nets.
• Due to lack of good quality fishing equipment, the fishermen are unable to get a good catch.
• Beneficiaries are selected through various methods like, identification of the target families during field visits, enquiring with the local community, personal verification of the beneficiaries and collecting data of the families' socio-economical conditions.
• There are around 300 scheduled tribe families dependent on fishing for a source of income.
• To aid this cause, CERDS has enlisted poor families belonging to 5 villages so far.

A fishing net changed his life
Challamcherla Thirupathaiah and his wife Lakshmamma, belonging to a tribal community, and are living in a small thatched hut in Parvathipuram village, Prakasam District, Andhra Pradesh. By tradition they are earning their livelihood by fishing in canals nearby the sea using angler hooks, which can catch only one fish at a time. Since they don not have proper fishing nets they cannot get large catchment of fish and do without enough food most of their days.
While conducting a survey in this village, CERDS learnt of this family struggling hard with lack of proper livelihood source. After getting information of this family, CERDS staff met them and enquired solutions for improving their livelihood conditions. As per their suggestion and requirement, CERDS extended support by providing a nylon multifilament throw fishing net, which can trap large numbers of fish at once.
Thirupathaiah & his family are able to increase the number of fish they catch and can able to meet their basic needs. They have improved their earnings and in turn enhanced their living standards. Thus, the small net helped them to improve their livelihood conditions and brought changes in his economic condition.
