Provide a month’s supplementary nutrition for 20 children at a day care centre at a construction site, INR 5000

Mobile Creches' (MC) runs a day-care programme for children of migrant labourers working in construction sites across Delhi and NCR (Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Noida). The day-care centres focus on health, nutrition and education. The nutrition program at the centre focuses on providing fresh, wholesome food and a balanced mix of nutrients to children. Each day-care centre has, on an average, 60 children in a year. 70% of the children that come to the day care centre for the first time are severely malnourished. With the nutrition program, MC strives to bridge this gap and bring them back to normal health. The day-care centre provides them three meals a day. Children have breakfast, lunch and a snack before going home. The meals are nutritionally dense comprising mainly of khichdi, dalia etc. Malnourished children are further provided supplementary nutrition of egg and banana to bring them back to normal health. For those more severely malnourished (Grades 3 and 4), the frequency of feeding is increased with a special low- cost, locally made, ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) of rice, wheat and chick pea (chana), 3-4 times a day. Staples like cereals and pulses are supplied by MC to the day-care centres. Perishable items like milk, fruits and vegetables are purchased locally by the centre staff, thus ensuring freshness. The food is cooked in each centre. Staff at the day care centre is trained to do cooking along with their teaching activity. A growth-monitoring exercise is done every month to assess the outcome of the above-mentioned interventions. It has been found that 75% of children in the age-group 0-3 years and 73 % of children in the age-group 3-6 years have either retained or come up to normal nutritional grade.

Ruby is a nomal weight child now
Ruby was born underweight and regularly suffered from acute diarrhoea. At 8 months, when she was brought to our day care centre in Gurgaon, she weighed only 5 kgs, a case of grade III malnutrition.
Under the special diet, care, protection and the watchful eye of MC staff, she started to gain weight. Her mother, now, understands the difference that good nutrition and simple hygiene can make.
Today, at 1 year 4 months, she weighs 8 kg, and is a “normal-weight” child! A study of under-3 children at our centres in 2006-07 revealed that of those who stayed with MC for 6 months, 71% either improved or retained their normal nutritional grades.
