Reimburse a fund that helps educate poor children in rural Bhopal, Chennai and Kumharpara, INR 5000

A happy and hassle free childhood is the right of every child. A good school or college is especially important for a child from a financially weak family because it provides an atmosphere and time that is abundant with the joy of learning and a break from the difficulties that she faces at home on account of her unfortunate circumstances. It is necessary that the parents of such children be saved from the hassles and burden of providing for the costs of their children’s formal education to ensure continuity in such education for the child. Akanksha Public Charitable Trust has been supporting children in Chennai, Bhopal and Kumharpara who come from financially weak families by paying their school and college fees. This takes a huge burden off their parents and also ensures that such children remain within the formal educational system for as long as they wish. The parents of the children who benefit from this program are usually known to the Trustees of Akanksha in their capacity as local small time service providers such as domestic help, dhobi or ironing services provider, support staff in schools or office establishments, drivers, etc. Typically, after such children are identified and have expressed their desire or willingness to be a part of the program, they submit fee bills issued by their respective schools or colleges and a cheque or draft is made out in the name of the educational institution. In rare cases or emergencies a cheque is made out in the name of the beneficiary or cash is given to a beneficiary. But in all cases a fee receipt is obtained from the educational institution and the children also submit to the trust their annual report cards. Trustees meet with the children and their parents from time to time to understand their realities, to establish and maintain relationships with the parents and the children and to sort out any other problems that they face.

Utter educational uncertainty to a career with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)
Anita was a soft spoken and eager school going girl when we met her about a decade ago. She was facing a difficult situation that many young girls of her age and background face continually through their lives and especially during their young years – the threat of having to abandon her school and joining her mother in providing domestic services in various households so that she could supplement her inadequate family income.
When we heard of this possibility from her mother, we assured her mother that we would stand by her and support her financially through her entire formal education and that of her sister Mahalakshmi and that she should not discontinue their education on any count. Over the last 10 years we built a relationship with the family and ensured the timely payment of the school and college fees of both Anita and her sister Mahalakshmi.
Today Mahalakshmi is a school teacher in a school in Chennai having completed her Masters in Arts from a reputed college in Chennai and Anita is a software engineer with Tata Consultancy Services having completed her Bachelors in Engineering from a reputed college in Erode. Both are self-reliant young women who are dealing with life and its battles confidently with the power that education has provided them.
