You can help a migrant child get treated for cancer by supporting monthly rations, INR 2000

Parents relocate to big cities where the hospitals are to get their child treated. When in the city, their parents earn very meagre incomes so they either end up living on footpaths or dharamshalas (shelter homes) or temporary homes. Most of the days, the parents go without all 3 meals and sometimes even so does the child with cancer. Families typically leave when they are unable to provide for their other children. Cuddles, through the nutritionist stationed at the hospital, understands whether the family has a place to stay and will provide a standard package of rations to a family of three. Usually a given family requires support for 3-6 months depending on the treatment and severity of the cycles of therapy. Ration baskets are given in kind at the hospitals or through a coupon system with predetermined vendors.

Cuddles Foundation works with Government Hospitals having Pediatric Oncology Departments. 50,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year in India and 80% of them are malnourished at diagnosis. Without nutrition the body reacts to chemotherapy as if it’s been poisoned and roughly about 4,000 children abandon treatment due to this every year. If a child is underweight, appropriate dosages of chemotherapy cannot be administered reducing the chances of cure by 30% as compared to an adequately nourished child. Cuddles is, hence, focussed on ensuring that every child has sufficient nutrition to be able to get the treatment necessary for cancer. In each hospital, they work with the existing nutritionists or hire and place nutritionist(s). The Nutritionist assesses each child to draw up diet plans as well as understand need for medical supplements.

Little Aliya Sayeed came cradled in her mum's arms to the hospital when she was just one and half years old. She was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor (a type of kidney cancer) and was severely malnourished. Her dad left the family when he found out about the cancer. Homeless and left to fend for herself and her child, Aliya's mum needed nutritional support both in the hospital and outside. Cuddles opened her mum's kitchen with monthly ration basket, supplements, and provided hot meals to Aliya in the hospital. Aliya's following up on her treatment, is no longer severely malnourished and is 6-months cancer-free!! Aliya's mom still doesn't have a pucca home but she's standing strong and not giving up on her child and her care!
