Overview
In the early 1970s , a socialist group of youth began seeking solutions to social and political problems of the rural community with the general aim of achieving a more just and happy society. After nearly 20 years of effort and agitations, they concluded that socio-political change was not possible without economic change. Hence, they established Manavlok, in 1982, a voluntary organization for the socio-economic upliftment of the rural poor. The beneficiaries in this program are women who are underprivileged but have the will to break the shackles and become financially independent.
How It Works
• The sourcing for this project as well is done through SHGs. They help Manavlok identify women who need additional sources of income. The training is given in sewing and in the making of sewai. The training usually happens in 2 batches of 8 people each. Each of the batches run for 6 months, during which the trainees are given a stipend of around Rs. 300.
• Some of their trainees come back to join as trainers as well. After the completion of the course, they also receive a sewing machine to start their business.
• The beneficiaries live in the 35 villages surrounding Ambejogai-they're mostly within a 15 km radius of the office and within 4-5 kms from each other
Statistics
• 16 women have benefited and became financially independent last year in the small villages of Ambajogai
