Provide 2 meals a day for a month for a senior citizen at the Community Kitchen, INR 1000

In the early 1970s , a socialist group of youth began seeking solutions to social and political problems of the rural community with the general aim of achieving a more just and happy society. After nearly 20 years of effort and agitations, they concluded that socio-political change was not possible without economic change. Hence, they established Manavlok, in 1982, a voluntary organization for the socio-economic upliftment of the rural poor. The beneficiaries in this program are senior citizens who have been ignored or thrown out of their home by their families.

How It Works

• The community kitchen for elderly citizens started off from their community kitchens project which provide meals for people of all age groups. Sourcing for this is again done through their contacts with SHGs.
• They are served two meals a day
• This benefits the SHGs as well as the senior citizens empowering a large number of people in a single program

• This program is implemented in 5 villages of Ambajogai district and close to 75 people eat meals everyday.

Empowering the women and elderly
Before this initiative by Manavlok, the old age people in these rural villages were facing problems regarding daily food needs. Hence their health was constantly deteriorating and they were unable to meet their daily needs because of belonging to economically weaker sections.
The program is implemented in 5 villages. A local SHG is responsible for the implementation of the program in each village- a group of three women run the centre and serve 2 meals to the elderly beneficiaries in the village- the first meal is served at 10.00 AM and the second one is served at 6.00 PM. Food served includes dal, chawal, roti, and sabzi. The SHG is paid by Manavlok at the end of every month based on the number of meals served- they're paid Rs. 20 per meal (Roughly amounting to Rs. 1200 per person per month) The beneficiaries are expected to pay about Rs. 200 per month. So the cost borne by the ngo is essentially Rs. 1000 per person per month.
The old people have started regaining strength and have no stress about trying to eat good meals everyday. They have become happier, more hopeful and positive towards life irrespective of their ignorant children. Two meals a day is all they need to regain their strength back, physically and emotionally.
