Facilitate mobility of a disabled adult or child by contributing to a fund for calipers/crutches/splints, INR 5000

The Association of People with Disability (APD) is a Bangalore based organization that is working on the comprehensive rehabilitation of economically marginalized people with disabilities. It works for children, youth and adults with various types of disabilities - primarily those with physical disability, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, development delay, and speech and multiple disabilities. APD provides residential training in horticulture to poor disabled youths from all over Karnataka.

The Basics

As per available information, there are several people with disabilities in India. Out of that, very few are gainfully employed. The reasons for this are many and could be a lack of opportunity, encouragement and/or poverty. However, the primary reason is that most of them come from the lower strata of society, where disability is viewed as a curse primarily because of the lack of awareness about the same. Added to this, their disability prohibits them from coming out of their shell. They end up becoming a burden to themselves, their parents, community and society at large. Or else they sink into depression and frustration and perish at a premature age.

How It Works

• This donation will help make these people self-reliant.
• Beneficiaries are identified through hospitals, camps and in-house users.
• Physiotherapists make an assessment and prescribe calipers.
• Once the Ortho unit receives the prescription, the assessment prototype is made and the final product is fitted to the beneficiary after the physiotherapist’s approval.

• 1 % - Percentage of people with disabilities who are gainfully employed
• 50-60 million – Number of people with disabilities in India • 52 – Number of years since APD was started

A new lease of life for Suma
Suma has severe Cerebral Palsy by birth. She is not able to communicate properly and can't do ADLS (Activity Daily Living Skills). Her parents were taking her to hospital for medical intervention but that was not helping her. Consequently Suma's condition was going from bad to worse. She was totally physically immobile. Psychologically she was shattered.
APD's Community Based Rehabilitation workers did detailed assessment of her condition. Then they made a plan of activities for her education and rehabilitation. CBR worker gave her therapeutic treatment like Neuro Therapy, Stretching Exercise, Hand Movement Exercise, ADLS (Activity Daily Living Skills) and provided her with calipers and trained her how to use it.
Now she is able to walk independently with the support of caliper. She is able to do her (ADLS) Activity Daily Living Skills. She is socializing and also pursuing her education and she is self-confident.
