Encourage inspiring girls from villages of Uttar Pradesh emerge as Social Change Icons, INR 2500

At Milaan, we believe in the power of girls and their stories of hope, aspiration, and compassion. The Milaan Girl Icon Fellowship program is a 2-year long leadership development program for adolescent girls (12-18 years) who have demonstrated willingness and ability to challenge social barriers that restrict unleashing of girls' potential in their communities. Started in 2015, the program received an overwhelming response from over 3000 adolescent girls across Uttar Pradesh from which 25 Girl Icon Fellows were selected. In 2016, the program expanded to 75 more fellows, 25 in Uttar Pradesh and 50 in Madhya Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh we currently have 210 Girl Icon Fellows who were inducted last December and selected from over 4000 application received from across the state. Every six months all the participants come together for a workshop and through the rest of the year work with a mentor who they can reach out for guidance/support anytime. The cost per fellow for 2 years is approximately Rs.2 lakhs per fellows (includes mentor and other program cost) which includes a learning grant of INR 20,000 and a social action grant of INR 5000. The grant is directly transferred via cheque/NEFT into the fellow's account on a written request which is vetted by the Program Manager. Learning grant is usually for school fees or shoes for an athlete or certain books on specific topics for some, etc. Social action grant is used to conduct an event or a campaign the girl runs to achieve their goal of social change. Eg: Educating villagers on using a toilet, cleaning up the toilet/drainage system in the school, so girls can use the toilet once again, etc.

Perceived as being “Mardani” which means “being manly”, Rajni, a 17-year-old from a Dalit family from Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, incessantly fights for social justice and has stopped six child marriages including her own. Without a rupee to commute, she tirelessly bikes 60 km everyday to attend college.
Milaan believes the barriers in society for girls are complex and interrelated. The Girl Icon Fellowship will empower girls to better navigate these social barriers and advocate for lasting change for their generation. Given that girls with disabilities in rural areas are doubly disadvantaged, they try and include as many girls with disabilities to also highlight their issues and make them agents of change to address the needs of this group.
Milaan believes in the power of adolescent girls like Rajni, to challenge and shift gender positioning within the communities. They identify, incubate and invest in adolescent girls to be change-makers in their own lives as well as for those within in their communities.
