Sponsor planting of wild tropical fruit trees for 25 households, INR 5000

Tropical Research & Development Centre’s (TRDC) Paryavaran project (Conservation of Water Resources and Biodiversity), which is run in the Western Ghats (Uttara Kannada, Chikkamagalur and Mysore Districts intends to address the issues of climate change by working in collaboration with local farmers. TRDC currently promotes tree planting to reduce pressure on forest resources as part of community based climate change adaptation strategy. Many wild trees are disappearing because of expansion of agricultural land.

How It Works

• TRDC’s volunteers keep searching for suitable villages in the project area (Currently its Uttara Kannada District), make initial discussion with communities.
• Once the communities and volunteers finalize the household jointly, TRDC supports them through the implementation of the enrichment planting of wild tropical fruit trees.
• Beneficiaries – famers are selected in such way that all of them fall below Rs.50000 net income per year.
• TRDC is working in this area since 2004 and has few volunteers who constantly support TRDC for implementing the activities.

The Statistics

• TRDC has distributed 1750 saplings each for 350 families in 15 villages during the year 2013-14

Plant a tropical fruit tree, save life on the earth!
Rare fruit yielding & medicinal plant species were affected due to habitat fragmentation. When TRDC started an inventory programme of wild tropical fruit trees & shrub species in the fringes of Western Ghats and Eastern plains, few community members said that all wild tropical fruits have been cut in the last 3 decades & they have started feeling the food security problem due to this deterioration.
We helped village communities in locating, collecting and evaluating existing biodiversity with special emphasis on identification & propagation of wild tropical fruits trees and medicinal plant species through decentralized nurseries. Also, we promoted the use of improved fruit diversity in local communities and develop market linkages for the local tropical fruit trees and medicinal plants
Communities have realized the importance of tropical fruits for their own food security & for wild life. Enrichment planting has started in Uttara Kannada District & in other parts of Karnataka. This has also lead to greater awareness among the forest department on the need for conservation of wild tropical & less known fruits and medicinal plants. Research & documentation has also increased greatly. Children in the photo are from Naroor village who have started showing active interest in planting wild tropical fruit trees for future generations, reverse climate change and to save life on the planet.
