Sponsor to a fund for running a Family Counseling Center (FCC) for victims of Domestic violence, INR 2000

It is sad but true that in the Shivaji Nagar slums of Govandi, Mumbai, the home is a dangerous place and it is the worst place to be in for a woman. Therefore empowerment of women rightly starts in the home. Apnalaya trains women to fight domestic violence, conducts awareness sessions and organizes women to come together and help each other. Apnalaya is also a government appointed service provider under the Domestic Violence Act 2005. Through the Sahara Gats meaning support groups women in the community are trained to handle cases of domestic violence, as many domestic disputes occur at night outside the Family Counseling centre beyond the working hours.
The Basics

Family Counseling Centre (FCC) is a haven for weeping and battle worn women, victims of exploitation, violence, infidelity, deprivation and blackmail. Here they find a friend who listens, offers advice and helps find strength within them to fight and win their legal and personal battles. The FCC also offers counseling and support to HIV cases in the community. The cases vary in its duration depending on its complexity from a few months to even years resulting in an amicable resolution or separation as the case may be. The objectives of the program are supporting victims of domestic violence and family conflict through: a) Family Counseling b) Support Group (Apnapan) meetings c) Creating Community Counselors (Sahara Group) d) Awareness in the community on women’s issues

Nafiza is a free woman now
Nafiza (name changed) approached us with a very unique problem. She went for a love marriage; however their love was short-lived as her husband turned out to be abusive. Even after they had a daughter, he continued to be abusive towards Nafiza and mistreated their daughter too. He convinced Nafiza to be a surrogate mother to childless couples, which would earn them good money and forced her to undergo surrogate pregnancy thrice. Her husband never gave her any money to run the household and frittered away her earnings on his vices. He would not even take care of her needs during her pregnancies and Nafisa continued to suffer domestic violence at his hands
When her husband started forcing Nafiza to go in for a fourth surrogacy, she decided that she did not want to weaken her health any further due these repeated pregnancies and approached our centre for help. We initially tried counselling her husband, but he continued treating Nafiza badly, regardless of our advice or warnings. We then convinced Nafiza to seek help from her brother and brought both brother and sister together and appraised him of his sister’’s sad situation. Her brother persuaded Nafiza to leave her husband and agreed to let Nafiza and her daughter stay with him.
Her husband was furious when Nafiza walked out of his home. He tried threatening her and when that did not work, resorted to emotional blackmail to persuade her to come back. We intervened on her behalf and warned him that if he continued to harass her, we would get help from police and take legal action against him. This scared him off and he left his wife alone without any further threats. Nafiza is now staying with her brother’’s family. She has managed to get a job and is able to provide for her and her daughter. She now leads a simple life with dignity and is hopeful of a better future for her daughter
