Help improve language and mathematics skills of children studying in rural government schools by part sponsoring the monthly salary of a Mentor, INR 7000

" Overview

Sikshana was started in 2002 by a small group of professionals with a common cause: improving the state of public education in the country. This small group has since been strengthened by the induction of other like-minded persons and the varied and diverse expertise they have brought with them. The Writing Sheet Program of Sikshana, which has been running since seven years, has emerged as a successful initiative in improving the writing ability among children in government schools.

The Basics

The objective of this programme is to improve the learning levels of students studying in rural government primary schools by providing resources (Mentors) to mentor the child and to monitor and assess the progress of the child.

How It Works

• Educated rural youth, who are locally available are identified in every area and are deployed to the schools.
• The role of the Mentor is to motivate children and teachers for overall development of the school and the child.
• They help teachers identify issues and problems and aid them in bringing out solutions from within the system.
• They monitor the progress of the children, mentor them in improving their learning levels and carry out periodic assessments to evaluate the progress.
• They are also responsible for implementing programmes that help in improving the learning levels.
• Most children studying in government schools are socio-economically deprived and hail from poor rural households with a meagre average monthly income and their parents cannot afford any extra coaching or training to improve their learning.
• These programmes help improve reading, writing and arithmetic skills of these children.

• Rs. 3,000 – Average monthly income of the parents of the Sikshana children

Impact of providing unlimited writing sheets on learning levels and writing for Exams.
Several schools lack writing and reading resources. The children find writing difficult because of lack of practice. Such schools are provided with writing sheets, diaries, writing material and dictionaries. Continuous and unrestricted writing increases the hand eye coordination, focus and ability to write long sentences for the exams. All of the above combined helps in the improvement of academic skills among children.
Children are given a set of sheets every week and are encouraged to fill and use them up by the end of the week. The ‘used sheets’ are exchanged for a fresh set. This exercise has produced quantified results showing a drastic improvement in the speed and quality of writing in majority of the students. In addition, the schools are enabled to optimize the utilization of the available resources and are guided in developing a road map for development.
With the Writing sheet program, writing speed of the children and their performance in academics has improved. The writing sheet exhibition and competition gave the children an opportunity to showcase their improved handwriting work and also inspired several other children too.
