Contribute to a fund for monitoring coaching for 2800 children across centres in 12 cities, INR 5000

Bhumi runs Ignite, a supplementary education programme for underprivileged children, in shelter homes and community centres.

The Basics

• Ignite currently coaches 2800 children a year, after school hours, in 12 cities across India.
• The programme aims to bridge educational inequities in a scalable and cost effective manner.
• Beneficiaries are children who live in shelter homes (orphanages), and slum or village communities.
• These children go to state-run schools during the week where their learning is ineffective.
• The curriculum is carefully selected to meet regional needs, and undergoes periodic revision.
• Learning itself is activity-based and interesting, to engage children on weekends.
• In addition to English, maths, science, and computers, the supplementary education programme is designed to address the competence in fundamentals of academic subjects, while building life skills.
• Children who are a part of Ignite also get opportunities to participate in Nakshatra, a talent development programme by Bhumi to exhibit and develop their talents in arts and sports.
• Trained volunteers deliver the programme during the weekends.
• Bhumi volunteers are students or young professionals who volunteer during their free time in the weekends.
• Volunteers affiliated with projects receive rigorous training in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, and year-round support.
• The beneficiary is tracked by their attendance in classes.
• Bhumi programmes improve their learning levels significantly.
• The benefit reflects in increased learning levels gauged through a Baseline Assessment Test (BAT) administered at the beginning of the year, followed up by a year-end assessment.
• The BAT is diagnostic in nature, and helps the facilitation team in identifying the learning needs of each child and create individualised plans if needed.

An Ignited mind
Sheela like most of our children is a first generation learner from a difficult background. She went to school daily but did not understand most of what was taught at school. She was scared of both English and Mathematics and scored poorly in the tests at school.
Bhumi''s young volunteers spend four hours every weekend with Sheela, her friends and children at over 200 shelter homes across India teaching English, Computers, Mathematics, Science and providing mentoring and life-skills support. This aids her holistic development, including education and inter-personal skills.
Sheela and her peers have increased learning levels and confidence. They not only enthusiastically participate at Bhumi classes but also enjoy their classes at school.
