Help a mentally ill woman reintegrate into society by supporting her monthly health care, INR 900

Paripurnata’s half-way Home caters to mentally ill-women who have been confined in jails and mental hospitals for almost a decade. It is a psychosocial rehabilitation centre, which prepares them and their families lead healthy lives in their natural homes and helps to integrate them into the wider society so that they can once again lead a normal life and continue their journey towards wholeness. Since its inception, Paripurnata has extended its services to patients staying in jails as NCLs (Non Criminal Lunatics) and also to patients staying in the government-run mental hospitals with more emphasis on NCLs. Presently mentally ill women are brought from Calcutta Pavlov Hospital. Apart from West Bengal, there are patients who belong to neighbouring states and neighbouring countries like Nepal & Bangladesh, too.

The Basics

Paripurnata means fulfillment/ wholeness and this is brought about through medical intervention and psychosocial training.

How It Works

• It is a temporary place, where those who have undergone treatment aim to adjust to their illness and social environment and learn how to cope with them.
• The rehabilitation programme offers pharmacotherapy, occupational therapy, non-formal education and counseling.
• Women also re-learn skills needed for daily living such as cooking, cleaning, shopping etc.
• The programmes are aimed at enabling the women to develop self-reliance and to gain confidence to participate meaningfully in family/ community living and to empower them to fight for their own rights.
• Another important concern during their stay at the Home is making contact with their families and facilitating graded exposures.
• The staff visits the homes & meets the family and the community to assess their preparedness to accept their ward, and build a therapeutic community, which will support both the mentally ill and the family in the neighbourhood.

• 9-12 years – Duration of time for which the patients stay at the half-way Home
• 10-12 years – Duration of time for which the patients were confined in jails and mental hospitals

Changing attitude of the family
Ms. Chaya Das 40 years old married woman having three daughters & a son. Her husband was suffering from mental illness. She had to struggle a lot to treat the husband and to take care of the children. She tried to provide good education to them and was taking care of every thing alone as there was no other social support. Being unable to deal with stressful situation she becomes mentally ill. She was suspicious, disruptive and she had violent behaviors towards children. She was admitted to the Calcutta Pavlov Hospital and was there around 2 years along with her husband. As both the parents were in the hospital, so growing children were in very pathetic condition.
She was then brought to Paripurnata Half Way Home for Psycho-social Rehabilitation. During 1 year stay in Paripurnata, she improved through various kinds of psychosocial and recreational interventions, social skills training and group sessions helped her in acquiring good skills which is necessary for family living. Considering their past experiences the children were reluctant to accept her initially. But after seeing her improvement the children’s attitude has been changed.
Now the couple is leading a very happy life & the children have a tremendous caring attitude towards their parents.
