Improve basic hygiene condition of two poor families in rural UP by donating toilet cleaning kits, INR 500

It is estimated that every year, an astounding 11 million children die worldwide from preventable diseases. That is approximately 30,000 children per day. An additional 300 million children suffer from illnesses caused by lack of clean water, poor nutrition and inadequate healthcare services. In India, the combined effect of inadequate sanitation, unsafe water supply and poor personal hygiene are responsible for 88 per cent of childhood deaths from diarrhea.

Flush n Pride is a recent initiative launched by Abhinav with the objective of eradicating the practice of defecating in the open in urban and rural areas. They are working to convert the existing dry toilets into low cost pour flush toilets and to construct new ones where none exist.

The Statistics

• Until now, Abhinav has been successful in removing 12,000 dry toilets in urban and rural areas.
• Sanitation and hygiene kits have been distributed among the poor families in the villages.
• The kits will include the following items: Washing Soap, Harpic liquid, phenyl solution and a Brush to about 50 families in 2014-15.

The Basics

• This initiative is aimed at the economically weaker section, as they constitute a significant portion of the society.
• Abhinav has taken on the responsibility to curb the increasing mortality rate in villages due to inadequate sanitation and hygiene practices.

A survey conducted by UNICEF on Women and Child Welfare in 2005 ,has shown that only 47 per cent of rural children in the age group of 5-14 wash hands after defecation. Hand washing with soap before eating and after defecation has been one of the major interventions on hygiene practices, which is being promoted among children in India through hygiene programmes in schools and campaigns through mass media. What started as an initiative for Abhinav has become a rigorous campaign to improve health and sanitation in the country.

Towards a Better Life
Bimla Devi belongs to a poor family and lives in Budhana village of Muzaffarnagar district with 4 children. She is a labourer and Abhinav had constructed toilet in her house under Flush and Pride campaign. She does not have sufficient funds/income to maintain, clean and buy toilet kits which results in toilet being in bad condition and not maintained. Due to this, their family members fall sick frequently. For curing the sickness, Bimla Devi has to arrange some money for medicines. Hence, it is very difficult for her to support the income of the family.
Abhinav has supported her family by providing Health and Hygiene kit that includes 4 soaps, 2 harpic liquid, 1 toilet cleaning brush, and 1 phenyl which are quite sufficient for three months.
Bimla Devi regularly cleans the toilet and this helps in diminishing the awful stink from toilet. Her family members are getting used to the habit of using soap for washing their hands before eating and after using toilet. So this reduces their chances of falling sick. Therefore, healthy and hygienic environment can be easily observed in the house of Bimla Devi.
