Sponsor hospital expenses for cleft surgery for a poor child at an outreach centre, INR 12000

Mission Smile is an international medical charity which is dedicated to helping improve the health and lives of children from different countries. To build long-term sufficiency in resource poor environments, doctors and local medical professionals are trained in the NGO’s partner countries so they're empowered to treat their local communities. The NGO also donates medical equipment and supplies and provides year-round medical treatments through their worldwide centres.

The Basics

Missions have been the flagship model for Mission Smile globally and in India. However after doing missions for several years, Mission Smile realized that they are not able to provide sustainability to their programmes. With a mission they are unable to provide long term comprehensive care to patients. They were also turning away a lot of cases - people whom they could not help on mission- because they did not have the available resources, or because it was not safe to operate on them in a camp setting. Mission Smile thus started to think of a permanent centre, and their first centre came up in 2008 in Kolkata.

How It Works

• Outreach centres are a shop within a shop concept.
• Mission Smile has a certain amount of space within an existing hospital, where they operate on either all days or some days of the week.
• The human resources are shared with the hospital.
• Mission Smile brings in the surgeon and anaesthetist.
• The rest of the human resources such as nurses, paediatric support, and administrative staff are shared with the hospital.
• Mission Smile pays the hospital for the use of their facilities and also pays the anaesthetists and surgeons.

• 5 years – Number of years during which Mission Smile has been doing missions in India
• 25 years – Number of years during which Mission Smile has been doing missions all over the world

Koyel and her smile find each other after 8 years
Koyel Mondal’s family, from Shyampur village in Howrah district of West Bengal, encountered cleft for the first time when their daughter was born with cleft lip. A daily-wage earner, her father saved money and brought Koyel to a government hospital in Kolkata first when she was 2 and then again when she was 4. The first time the long queue of people in line before her prevented her from availing of the surgery and the second time she was rejected due to low hemoglobin count. The family abandoned hope after this.
Mission Smile India visited Payel’s village for a Mission in July 2012 when she was 8 years old. Payel encouraged her family to take her to the camp where she was examined and found fit for a surgery. This was performed completely free of cost to the incredulous and grateful family.
Koyel’s broken smile was completed and healed through the surgery at Mission Smile India’s center at Kolkata and after 8 years of waiting, this little girl is able to play and spend her childhood normally with other children her age. As the family were leaving her father approached the doctors and nurses and said, Not only have you given my beloved daughter a beautiful smile but also you have given me the chance to look at her face without a constant guilt in the back of my mind.
