Provide a leprosy patient with a fresh start by contributing to a reconstructive surgery fund to correct deformities, INR 5000

The Leprosy Mission Trust India works with individuals and communities disadvantaged by leprosy by addressing their physical, mental, social and spiritual needs to uphold human dignity and eradicate leprosy.

How It Works

• Majority of the TLMTI hospitals have facilities for reconstructive surgery in leprosy.
• Facilities include in-patient beds, physiotherapy & occupational therapy, facilities for pre-operative assessment & education, well equipped operation theatres with trained staff, post-operative care, and physiotherapy & occupational therapy facilities for prolonged post-operative re-education and management.
• People who have deformities and disabilities are referred by the government health care facilities.
• They are registered as cases needing surgery and physical therapy.
• Many patients need physical therapy before surgery.
• Reconstructive surgeries are arranged in camps.
• This is not a regular medical camp but a need-based camp, where a number of patients are collected and admitted together in the hospital and have their pre-operative physical therapy.
• This group is operated in one go, either in the TLMTI Hospital or in the District Hospital.
• Preparations begin a couple of months in advance, and frequency depends on the need.
• Patients are identified through the Government Healthcare systems.
• Patients also come directly through the TLMTI community-based projects.

• 2 months – Number of months prior to the surgery when preparations begin
• 8 – Number of need-based camps held in 2013-14
• 13 – Number of TLMTI hospitals that have facilities for reconstructive surgery in leprosy
• 14 – Total number of TLMTI hospitals

Hope Restored
Hemant Kumar, a 20 years old leprosy affected youth, was unable to do his daily work because of the developed weakness in his left hand. His fingers started becoming clawed. He was completely frustrated and had lost confidence. He was very disturbed thinking that perhaps he would not be able to continue studies. He was also worried of reactions from his family and friends.
Someone suggested that he should visit The Leprosy Mission Bethesda Leprosy Hospital in Champa. He was put on Multi Drug Therapy (MDT) for a year and was taught exercises for his clawed hand. In 2012, he went through Reconstructive Surgery and his clawed hand was corrected.
Post surgery, his fingers are straightened out. During his admission to our hospital, he was advised to join our Vocational Training Centre for a Diesel Mechanic course, free of cost. He is about to join the next batch soon. He is very thankful to The Leprosy Mission Trust India Hospital for giving him a new life.
