Help educate children from a leprosy background by reimbursing a fund for their schooling, INR 2000

The Leprosy Mission Trust India works with individuals and communities disadvantaged by leprosy by addressing their physical, mental, social and spiritual needs to uphold human dignity and eradicate leprosy.

The Basics

Till the late 1980s and early 90s,The Leprosy Mission Trust India was running its own schools for children affected by leprosy or from leprosy backgrounds as mainstream schools refused to admit and educate these children. With the cure for leprosy and TLMTI''s initiatives, these children living and studying in TLMTI hostels and schools started gaining admission in mainstream schools. However, the poor financial condition of many families posed a challenge in educating their children. Therefore, the Catch Them Young (CTY) programme was introduced in 1998 to partially finance and support students pursuing education in schools/colleges or professional courses.

Education under Catch Them Young
Pinky Tandan and Rinky Tandan are two sisters. Pinky is 11 years old and studying in Grade 5. Rinky Tandan is 6 years old, studying in Grade 1 this year. They are children of Laxmin Bai and Santosh of Ghoghra Nala, Champa. Both the parents are affected by leprosy. They reside in a leprosy colony situated outside the campus of TLM Champa . Mr. Santosh expired in 2011. He was a labourer by profession and the only bread earning member in his family. After his death the burden of three children (including Rani – 3 years old) was solely only Laxmin Bai. It was very difficult for her to run the family and meet the everyday needs of the family. She was seriously considering pulling the children out of school as she simply could not bear the costs on educating them.
When she came to know about the Catch Them Young Programme started by TLM, she approached the TLM Hospital Champa. She was referred to the Project staff who visited her house and completed the need assessments and referred her for the CTY financial assistance. The Rehabilitation Committee considering the need, finalized to provide the assistance to her children to support their education. This year both the children are covered under CTY programme.
Both Pinky and Rinky are going to school regularly. Laxmin Bai is very happy that her children are able to continue their education with the support. She thanks TLM for the support. TLM hopes that, through a small support Pinky and Rinky will be encouraged to complete their school education without dropping out.
