Give slum children an opportunity to learn by sponsoring the Balwadi Teacher salary for a month, INR 6000

Members of CORP believe that the first few years of a child’s life are vital to his or her future education and growth. Staff members of CORP provide parents with a ray of hope for their children’s future through their crèche and preschool programmes, which are located in some of the most poverty-stricken areas of Mumbai.

The Basics

The first few years of a child’s life are critical for his or her development. Properly utilizing this slim window opens doors to a lifetime of learning, which in turn leads to greater development, opportunity and employment prospects. Early childhood education presents a unique opportunity to help break the cycle of poverty, which is often passed down through generations owing to limited schooling opportunities.

How It Works

• Several young children of working mothers are currently enrolled in the day centres, where they are provided with a foundational education which will prepare them for their formal schooling.
• These children are provided with nutritious meals, access to basic healthcare, and are taught about cleanliness and hygiene.
• Most importantly, they are provided a safe and caring environment during the day, thereby allowing their parents to go to work to support the family.

• 5 months to 8 years – Age of children at the Balwadis
• 20 – Number of crèches and preschool programmes run by CORP
• 1, 400 – Total number of young children of working mothers who are enrolled with CORP

Tejal Shivaji
Tejal Shivaji is 3 years old. She is the youngest among three children. Her father was an alcoholic who spent all his earnings on drinks and did not take care of his family. Tejal’s mother had to take care of the children and also worked as a domestic helper. Unfortunately adding to the misery, Tejal’s father fell from the building and died. It was a herculean task for the mother to take care of the household expenses and three children with her meager income. There was no one else to support them. The children were neglected and malnourished.
When the mother heard about CORP, she approached our centre. Upon hearing her sad story the staff admitted all three children. Tejal was only 1.5 years old when she joined the centre. She was the one who was most affected. Her hair was red from severe malnutrition and was very skinny.
Tejal along with her siblings received love, care and nourishment from the staff. She also benefitted from good medical care from the doctors who visited the children regularly. She is now very happy and healthy. Her mother can confidently leave her children in safe environment and got to work
