Gift living expenses of a blind girl who is pursuing higher education for a month, INR 1300

There is a significant population of young, visually challenged girls who hail from the fringe suburbs of Pune city. Most of these children need to be blessed with the right to education which eventually lights up their lives and opens many new employment avenues. Most of them face challenges in the form of unaffordable travel & lodging expenses. As a result their parents are reluctant to support their dream of attaining education.

To bridge this need and encourage young women to follow their aspirations, Bhagini Nivedita Pratishthan provides hostel facilities to blind girls studying in high school and college.

The Basics

• The beneficiaries are identified through advertisement in newspapers and references from past students. All applicants are required to provide a current financial statement, a letter or statement verifying the applicant’s or applicant’s parents’ legal blindness.
• The benefit is provided based on individual need and socio-economic status. The current batch of students is pursuing higher education in Arts, Commerce, B.Ed., D.Ed. etc.
• There are 3 staff members, as well as two NGO volunteers who manage the hostel.
• The girls live on campus throughout the academic year.

Monika Randive
Monika Randive says: I am from farming family with a very meager and irregular income. It was really impossible for a blind girl like me to in city like Pune by myself.
Mrs. Meera Badave from Niwant Andh Muktalay suggested that I should stay at the BNP hostel. I approached the hostel authorities. They were very kind and agreed to provide accommodation at a concessional rate.
I am staying here for last year and a half. I learnt many things here like cleanliness, following hostel rules and cooperation. I have become more confident. I take part in all the activities organized. I heard from my old friends that it is safe and secure here, which is very true. My parents are also relieved. Now I can concentrate on my studies and aspire to become independent person.
