Set up a vegetable garden to provide a tribal family assured regular income., INR 2800

"se Overview

“Janmitram” meaning “Friends of People,” was established in October 2002. Since then it has been working with the government and community towards development. Their vision is to intervene among backward and disadvantaged communities by raising awareness and skills to enable them to recognize better opportunities offered by our great democratic nation.

The Basics

The objective of the programme was to optimize use of the degraded/waste land by integrated development (horticulture and vegetable promotion) in tribal areas.

How It Works

• In the first stage a survey was conducted.
• Farmers were selected on the basis of land and tribes who were prevalent in these areas.
• The list of beneficiaries was drawn up after which Janmitram approached NABARD to seek funding and support for the wadi programme.
• NABARD sanctioned a large part of the programme and local contributions and the line department covered the shortfall.
• After a few years of plantation, except for tending the farms which is done by the farmers, all resource material and capacity building is done by the organization with the support of NABARD.
• The farmers themselves through the federation sell fruits and vegetables produced by the farms.
• They benefit from selling their produce at good prices.
• Janmitram provides support in marketing and linkage of the product.

• 4 – Number of years after plantation when resource material and capacity building is supported by NABARD

Bot Singh- Role model for other farmers
Bot Singh is a tribal farmer of Sardhap village of Gharghoda block in Raigarh District. He owns two acres of wasteland in his village. He had no alternative source of income except farming and lived in abject poverty.
Janmitram provided Bot Singh with training, seeds, fertilizer and agricultural tools from NABARD funds. Bot Singh prepared his land, planted the seeds and used the fertilizers as instructed. In time he had got a good crop of vegetables, which he was able to sell at a good price
Our support provided him work and income through the year. He was able to earn about Rs. 4000 through this kitchen garden. This help changed his life as well as that of his family. It also earned him the respect of his neighbours. He is now a role model for other farmers.
