Mission/Vision
Diya Foundation envisions individuals and their families alive with dignity and pride in the present and hope in the future
 
Background
There are few work options for mentally retarded adults after special school, and they aren't prepared to meet the after-school transition period; Diya Foundation was started to bridge the gap between school to work to life-skills transitions.
 
A special educator by profession, Maria Santamaria (kown as Sarah), started by teaching at a school for children with special needs in Mumbai. A Masters in Special Education from Cardinal Stritch College, Milwaukee, and work experience in job coaching uniquely equipped her to start a Vocational Training Centre for differently-abled adults and led to her founding the Diya Foundation in 1999

1 Marguerita Lobo Marguerita Lobo has been working with people with disabilities. She presently volunteers at Swanthana, teaching abandoned children with a disability and assists in the Training program in Diya with lesson plans and task analysis for systematic training.
2 Rajan Narayanan Presently Rajan is active in the social sector as a chief volunteer for the Joy of Giving week initiative. In addition to being a trustee at Diya Foundation, he is also a panel member at Whiteboard, an initiative to help NGOs with their operational issues, and a trustee at Baale Mane, a home for girls.
3 Col. Michael Angelo Michael Angelo is a retired army officer. He retired from active service in 2005 and was re-employed in the army for a year before he joined Reliance Retail as their Admin Head for Karnataka for a period of three years.
4 Gerald D’Souza Gerald D’Souza is a post-graduate in Human Resources Management and Industrial Relations from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. Post retirement, he runs a consultancy firm – Mehr Consultancy. His expertise in HR helps us in fine tuning our Staff Performance Appraisals, HR Policy and Volunteer Policy.

 Trained students of Diya
Shirley , Mary and Irfan together train and supervise the work of all the intellectually disabled trainees. Trainees are taught to work on and improve their Personal-Social Skills and Daily Living Skills. They are also provided Occupational Guidance depending on their abilties. Thanks to the training, many of our trainees can help complete simple tasks like making candles, fridge magnets, paper lanterns etc. Our trainees get a monthly stipend and are happy to contribute to society
