Mission/Vision
Make A Difference mobilizes young leaders to enable equitable outcomes for children in shelters across India. Our mission is to improve quality of life and outcomes for children in shelters. Our minimum target is to ensure that these children are able to live a life free from exploitation and are capable of managing emotional and financial life crises.
 
Background
As of today Make a Difference reaches out to 4500 children living in 70 shelter homes in 23 cities in India, through a highly efficient Fellow managed volunteering model. A Director team of 29 staff provides expertise, processes, training and support to 400 Fellows and 3500 volunteers, and the Make a Difference programmes are designed to bring out the best in children despite their circumstances, insecurities and challenges.
 
According to UNICEF, India is home to the largest child population in the world, with 400m children that include an estimated 31m orphans, and nearly 176m of these are considered to be in need of care and protection. Children at risk in India, whether orphaned and otherwise, of ten end up in shelters, which are under resourced and often focused more on basic needs than either childcare or longer-term progression. The result is that both quality of life and adult outcomes for children in this demographic are very poor, leading to cycles of poverty and abandonment .With inadequate educational qualifications, life skills, financial or emotional support to cope outside these institutions; children who have grown up in shelters often take up menial jobs, or get trapped into alcoholism, violence, drug abuse, prostitution or trafficking. Make A Difference exists to address these challenges on both a local and a systemic scale. Through our core programmes, Ed Support, Propel & Aftercare and Dream Camps, Make a Difference creates a support system and an emotional safe space for children in shelters by ensuring every child has at least 3 adults who care for them, understand them and who they can reach out to when they feel overwhelmed. They have access to them for a minimum of 2 hours a week from the age of 10. Our trained mentors spend time getting to know and developing an individual plan for each of their children.

1 Rakesh Saha Rakesh first started working with Make A Difference as a teaching volunteer, went on to be the English Project Fellow for the Bangalore City Chapter. After 2 years he joined full-time to develop MAD’s Education Support programme. The Education Support program has made a significant transition from providing only communicative English to a program that provides after-school support to children in a range of subjects including Maths, Science and English.
2 Jithin C Nedumala Jithin founded Make a Difference along with three of his friends in 2006. Jithin was awarded the Ashoka Global Youth Social Entrepreneur award, Karmaveer Puraskar, Cordes Fellowship, Dasra peer grant and Youth Actionnet Fellowship. He was one of the few social entrepreneurs personally supported by Michelle Obama through her International Youth Engagement Program.
3 Abid Millath Abid Millath was one of the members of a first volunteer group since 2006 and is currently an advocate at the Kerala High Court
4 Kavin K Kavin was one of the members of a first volunteer group since 2006 and is currently a VP, Branch banking at Kotak Mahindra bank
5 Sanjana Kuruvilla Sanjana was one of the members of a first volunteer group since 2006 and is currently a business partner at Kuruvilla & Sons.
6 Shilpa Gangadharan Manari Shilpa was a teaching volunteer and Mentor with MAD. Shilpa joined Make A Difference full time, taking on the role of Operations Director for the Central Region, before revolutionising the Human Capital function in her current capacity. Shilpa is passionate about the prevention of Child Sexual Abuse and is a certified sexuality and personal safety trainer, and thus has helped develop MAD’s strong internal policies on the same.
7 Sanjay Thomas Sanjay started his journey with Make A Difference as a teaching volunteer while still studying. He decided to combine his two big passions, impact and technology, and the software he developed for solving the problem of teacher absenteeism on ground was selected for iHub, the innovations platform in MAD. Sanjay eventually joined MAD full time as Director of Technology.
