Mission/Vision
ALERT-INDIA will strive towards programmes focussing on community partnership strategies to achieve the goal of leprosy elimination during the integration phase, in alliance with all the stake holders, to make elimination a reality for people.
 
Background
Way back in 1978, leprosy prevalence in Mumbai was 11 to 15 cases per 10,000 population in slums. ALERT INDIA established ALERT INDIA with an urban leprosy control focused project in N, S & T wards of Mumbai and undertook intensive surveys to detect and treat cases in zone wise treatment centres. One of the principal goals was to treat and cure leprosy affected persons without disability at an early stage and prevent the displacement from their families.
 
Mr. Antony Samy began to work in a leprosy colony as a student of social welfare administration at TISS. He took it as his mission to work for community based leprosy control programme to stop displacement people affected by leprosy an stop social segregation of them in to leprosy colonies and institutions. This conviction had guided creation of ALERT INDIA in October 1978 with support of well wishers and friends. This work is continued by him till date..

 Detection reduces disease transmission and infections
Rambhau reported at the Leprosy Referral Centre with changes in skin texture in addition to skin nodules. Rambhau was cured completely. He lives a normal life. Timely invention not only stopped the spread of the infection and ensured no permanent damage to his limbs but also helped in stopping the spread of infection to people around him. He was examined by the Leprosy technician and the medical officer at the LRC located at the Sub District Hospital. His skin smear was examined and found positive for (MB (Multi Bacillary) which was infectious. He was started with MB-MDT. He also had anesthesia on the hands and feet. He was advised on self care on management of his insensitive hands and feet and provided MCR footwear.
 
 Timely intervention saved hands of a young tribal lady
19-year-old Soni Mansaram Bhil, is an unmarried young tribal lady from the Bhil community. She is a resident of village Nyahalod under PHC- Kapadane in Dhule district, Maharashtra. She is the daughter of farm labourers. Soni was brought to the medical officer of Kapdane PHC with complaints of skin patches, increasing in size with burning sensation. She was counseled how to take care of herself and was provided with MCR footwear for prevention of ulcers in the anesthetic sole During the periodic follow-up assessment, it was found that the Lepra reaction had completely subsided. Soni and her family were relieved. The PHC medical officer referred her to the skin department of the medical college attached to the district hospital, Dhule, where the dermatologist diagnosed her as MB (Multi Bacillary) leprosy and referred her back to PHC for MB-MDT treatment. The medial officer examined Soni. On nerve function assessment, it was found that she was in Type I Lepra Reaction. He noticed anesthesia over her soles with dryness and cracks in the skin and started steroid therapy along with MDT.
 
 Ignorance from the family led to worsening of the situation
Mukesh Shildar Pawar, a 13-year-old boy, resides with his family in Amode village of Shirpur block at Dhule district in Maharashtra. His family consists of his mother, an elder brother and a younger sister. Mukesh is a school dropout and hence most of the time he is found playing with other children in the village. He was totally ignorant that he had leprosy. The Block Coordinator (BC) counselled Mukesh and convinced about the importance of treatment and asked him to bring his mother along with him to discuss about the problem. Mukesh’s mother contacted BC to know the reason for clawing fingers of Mukesh. Periodic interventions by BC, Mukesh’s regular passive exercise at home and weekly treatment at LRC showed positive results. Mukesh and his family are happy because of the improvement. BC is also making effort in motivating Mukesh to join back to school. Through the conversation with Mukesh it was found that Mukesh had consulted Medical Officer of the Sanghavi PHC at Shirpur block who had directed him to go to Shirpur Government Hospital for further check up. But this advice of the Medical Officer was ignored by Mukesh’s family. Because his mother and brother work at farms as casual laborer to earn for the livelihood for the family. They did not want to lose their daily wages. BC counselled her and explained her that the clawing of fingers is due to leprosy and for that Mukesh need to visit Shirpur LRC for treatment and services for correction of his clawing fingers. He also mentioned about the free treatment as the mother was worried about the treatment expenses.
