To be an agent of change in order to help children with or at risk of developmental disabilities work towards realizing their full potential.
Dr. Vibha Krishnamurthy and her husband Ashish Karamchandani relocated to India in 1999. Vibha joined Jaslok Hospital and helped a number of NGOs and realized that the extent of care for children with development disabilities was limited and even the care that was present was often sub-optimal. Vibha and Ashish hence felt that it was important to enhance the quality of Care for children with developmental disabilities in India, and started Ummeed, a non profit organization to do this. Ummeed and the International Developmental Pediatrics Association will be hosting the 2nd International Developmental Pediatrics Association Congress in Mumbai, India from 7th to 10th December 2017 at the Nehru Center, Mumbai where pediatricians, developmental pediatricians, neurologists, psychologists, therapists, counselors, educators, advocates and policy makers to register for the conference who are working in the field of pediatrics and allied disciplines would be participating. Do watch this special video about a child’s journey at UMMEED to understand more about the work we do and the impact we make! Dr. Vibha Krishnamurthy is the Founder and Medical Director of Ummeed. She moved to the US where she trained at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University and Children's Hospital, Boston. The idea of Ummeed was born while she was working at Children's Hospital Boston as a Developmental Pediatrician. The resources available at the hospital and community in Boston brought home to her the paucity of facilities available for children with developmental disabilities in India. She worked with a number of non-profit organizations as well as Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, while she reflected on how best to provide the range of specialized services required for children with special needs. On November 5, 2001, she founded Ummeed with an initial staff of three. Today Ummeed provides specialized care for most developmental disabilities. Almost 70 professionals ranging from pediatricians to therapists to mental health professionals and social workers support its services. She is also a member of the Expert Committees on Disabilities and Early Childhood Development at the WHO and UNICEF, and an expert consultant at the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and the National Trust.
