Mission/Vision
To provide services like education, training, guidance and counseling to underprivileged women and children in order to ensure protection of their rights, self-reliance and empowerment.
 
Background
Swadhar's Founder Meenakshi Apte was a professor and HOD of Family & Child Welfare in TISS .She witnessed many cases of domestic violence against women. She feels that ignorance amongst women is the main cause of their suffering so in order to have some place where they can be guided, counselled and made aware of their rights, she and other like minded women came together and Swadhar was started.
 
Sarita Bhat is the President of Swadhar for the period 2012 to 2015. She had been the President of a very prestigious Institute Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Sanstha for 10 years. She is known to be disciplined, upright person. Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Sanstha flourished in her tenure by starting engineering, architecture, fashion designing and management colleges for girls. We are very confident that we will greatly benefit from her guidance.

 Rehabilitation of a woman
The lady was married fifteen years ago and had suffered physical and mental torture by husband. Her husband deserted her and her two children (a fourteen year old daughter and a ten year old son), eight years ago, and is untraceable till date. He is absconding. She has been provided a room to live at her current place of employment, where she prepares around 1000 rotis per day in two batches. She approached the police department to trace her husband, but to no avail. So she now wishes to apply for a divorce. Our organisation provided financial support for her legal charges and educational support for her children. Our social worker helped her obtain her marriage registration certificate, file the application with the Police Department to trace her husband, get medical aid for her daughter who met with an accident. She was counselled, and encouraged to continue living her life with dignity, despite her misfortune. She is living her life in a dignified way, and taking care of her two children on her own. Her children are able to continue their education, and also pursue their hobbies with the support from Swadhar. We encourage them to learn something or study further to become independent and we help them financially if anyone wants to study further.
 
 Rights of children to have a dignified life
Mhalappa is a 7 year old orphan boy whose parents died of AIDS. His uncle and aunt look after him and his 14 year old sister. They live in Ram Nagar, Hadapsar, Pune Both the children are HIV+ve. Mhalappa used to fall sick very often. He was also a patient of T.B. He dropped out of school because of absenteeism. He is registered under Swadhar project, ‘Rays of Hope’. He is put on a protein rich diet consisting of peanuts, jaggery, dates, eggs and milk powder and Anti-retro-viral treatment recommended by the doctor. There is a substantial improvement in his health. He comes to the centre every month with his aunt to collect his nutritional supplement. With Swadhar help, he was put back into school. Now Mhalappa is a happy, school going child just like any other child. He is in Grade 1. Though there is an improvement in his health, he is very susceptible to opportunistic infections and falls sick often. But he is no more an orphan child. His uncle and aunt look after him very well and love him which makes him a happy, secured child.
 
 From dependant to a support
After scoring 90 percent in Grade 10, she took admission in the Government Polytechnic College for her diploma in I.T. After first year, she was forced to drop out as she could not afford the costs of living in Pune. The College Principal directed her to Swadhar. We supported towards her paying her mess bill in her second year and occasional medical bills. In the later part of her final year, we managed to get a donation from a trust for the complete support towards her education including fees, room rent, mess bill and other educational expenses. We also counseled her regularly. She has completed her education. She is now self-dependent and also is able to support the higher education for her younger brother.
